Supreme Court Says “No” to Census Citizenship Question

The decision by the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday to not allow a citizenship question on next April's 2020 Census has positive implications for Broward County, both on the issue of federal funding for programs assisting our most vulnerable residents, and potentially our representation in Congress. There is a high percentage of non-citizens residing in South Florida, and it is believed that the inclusion of a citizenship question would reduce Census response, resulting in an incomplete count.

In 2010, the estimated undercount in Broward diverted millions of dollars to other areas of the country. Federal dollars related to population fund programs for children, the elderly and lower income households, alleviating the need to supplement programs with local taxpayer revenue. More…

Bus Service Improvements

Broward County Transit (BCT) has been given the green light to implement bus service improvements to its fixed routes, which will be funded by the transportation referendum passed by voters last November. BCT will roll out the improvements in two phases during the summer and fall. Service improvements include the addition of new routes, 147 new buses, expanded weekday and weekend services that extend into neighboring counties, shorter wait times, completing the installation of free Wi-Fi throughout BCT's entire bus fleet, restoring routes suspended during the recession, and launching mobile ticketing. July 4th Pet Safety Tips

The upcoming Fourth of July holiday is marked by all kinds of celebrations, activities and food that can be fun for your family, but not for your pet. Broward's Animal Care and Adoption offers some important tips to keep your pet safe and calm during the holiday:

  1. Keep your pet away from fireworks and loud noises.
  2. Keep your pet safely away from hot grills, charcoal and lighter fluid.
  3. Do not feed your pet "people food" or alcohol.
  4. Sunscreen, insect repellant and citronella candles and oil can be harmful to your pet. If your pet ingests a poisonous substance, contact your local veterinarian right away or the Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435.
  5. Protect your pet by making sure they're wearing a Broward County license tag and that a microchip, if any, is registered to your current contact information.

Report from the Broward Municipal Services District

An Employment Self-Sufficiency Program was developed to help reduce the high unemployment rates in the Broward Municipal Services District. With support from the Board of County Commissioners, Broward County partnered with OIC of South Florida on a program to hire individuals to perform some of the services typically performed by County government. The partnership has not only provided tangible results, but has also impacted lives. Hear the story of Percy Campbell who has benefited from the Employment Self-Sufficiency Program.

Things to Do at a Park Near You

Kids shouldn't be in boats without life jackets, any more than they should be in cars without car seats and seat belts. The Broward County Marine Advisory Committee provided $5,000 for the purchase of life jackets to the nonprofit organization Pompano Beach Power Squadron. The funds, through the Enhanced Marine Law Enforcement Grant program, made it possible for the group to buy life jackets for boaters who fail to provide these mandatory safety devices for children on board. Broward's Parks and Recreation Division's Special Populations Section, in partnership with the Supportabilities Foundation, offers another round of the Cross-Round Fitness program to teach self-defense through non-contact boxing and to promote physical fitness through adaptive exercises. The program for ages 18 and up with physical disabilities, runs on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 7:30PM starting July 10th and ending August 28th at Oak Ridge Hall at Tree Tops Park in Davie.
